Looking for People in Australia

Do you have family or friends who have disappeared?
People who have vanished leaving no point of contact or explanation?
Do you know of people who have disappeared?

"Each year, around 30,000 people are reported missing in Australia - one person every 18 minutes. The 30,000 people exceed the total number of victims, reported to police for homicide, sexual assault, and unarmed robbery combined.
Nationally, the rate of missing people reported to the police is 1.55 per thousand, and it varies considerably around Australia with South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory have rates double the national average. Children and young people having rates three times those of adults." 1

In 2000, more than 8000 people will be reported missing in New South Wales alone, and more than 30,000 Australia wide. Sixty per cent of people reported missing are under the age of 18.

In New Zealand, "Each year about 12,000 people are reported missing to New Zealand Police." 2

Australian police are committed to undertaking thorough and extensive investigations where there are serious concerns for the safety and welfare of a missing person. Police based in the State or Territory where the initial missing persons report is filed are responsible for coordinating all inquiries and keeping you updated about progress.

Missing Person Units
POLICE MISSING PERSON UNITS (MPUs) conduct searches for missing people and carry out associated investigations. Only one missing persons’ report should be filed with police in your State or Territory. Searches will then be co-ordinated on a national basis as required.
I was told (quite rudely) by Carol Kiernan, of The Australian Bureau of Criminal Intelligence
(ABCI) in Canberra, by phone on 13th September, 2001 - that MPUs have "nothing to do
with Crimestoppers." but the National Missing Persons Unit Website CLEARLY lists six states MPUs (all of them except ACT & QLD) which are all linked to CrimeStoppers sites. Someone care to explain that one to me, because I don't get it.
