Matthew Wales,
charged with the murders of his millionaire mother Margaret Wales-King
and step-father Paul King, has made a brief appearance in Melbourne Magistrates
Court. Chief Magistrate Ian Gray remanded Wales, 34, of Glen Iris, to appear
again for mention on September His wife, Maritza Elizabeth Wales, 38, who
has been charged as an accessory after the fact, had her bail extended
on the same conditions as before. They were not required to enter a plea.
Matthew King's
lawyer Steve Pica made an application for his client to be transferred
to the Metropolitan Assessment Prison as soon as possible instead of being
held in the remand centre because of the unprecedented publicity surrounding
the case.
Prosecutor
Luisa Dipietrantonio asked that "no inappropriate media comment be made
in this matter until the proceedings are concluded".
"These people
have a right to a fair trial," she said.
Matthew and
Maritza Wales exchanged glances with each other through most of the brief
procedural hearing. Mrs Wales occasionally dabbed away tears. Her lawyer,
Paul Galbally, asked that her current residential address be kept confidential.
The bodies of Mrs Wales-King, 68, and Mr King, 70, were found by park rangers
in a bush grave near Marysville, north-east of Melbourne, on April 29.
They were last seen alive at a dinner with Matthew and Maritza Wales and
their son Domenik at their Glen Iris home on April 4. They were reported
missing by Mrs Wales-King's daughter Emma Connell the following Monday.
