while it was patrolling near Christmas Island, off north-west Australia,
the Defence Department said. The department said a search and rescue operation
had been launched for the sailor, who was last seen at 1.30am. In a statement,
Chief of Navy Vice Admiral David Shackleton said all compartments of the
guided missile frigate had been searched repeatedly without any sign of
the sailor's whereabouts.
He said said
a Seahawk helicopter was conducting a surface search with support from
the ship's boats, taking into account ocean currents, sea conditions and
prevailing winds. HMAS Darwin has been retracing its course. Vice-Admiral
Shackleton said the next of kin of the missing sailor, who has not been

search."The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) places the highest priority on

rescued from the sea." HMAS Darwin has been deployed off the coast of Christmas
Island conducting maritime border protection patrols. A Royal Australian
Airforce P-3C Orion maritime patrol craft was to join the search at first
light on Sunday and civilian rescue organisations and all merchant shipping
in the area have been asked to assist.A free-call hotline has been established
for concerned relatives of HMAS Darwin sailors on 1800 801 026.

used different people to search those compartments and we've actually gone
looking underneath equipment and through the machinery spaces to conduct

Question Stepfather's Story About Missing Boy
May 2 — Investigators
have begun to question the story of a man who said his 2-year-old stepson
disappeared from a San Diego playground a week ago, because they found
no fingerprints of the boy's in the area, and the man failed a polygraph
test, police reportedly said.
Jahi Turner,

Missing Child Case Turns Sinister
ABCNEWS
& Reuters
SAN DIEGO
(Reuters) - The search for a 2-year-old San Diego boy, reported missing
from a playground a week ago, turned sinister Thursday with reports of
glaring inconsistencies in his stepfather's version of events. Police declined
comment on local media reports that fingerprint tests had failed to find
any evidence of the child having played at the site recently, or that his
stepfather had taken a lie detector test and "failed miserably". "We have
not commented on details of the investigation in the past and we're not
going to start today," police spokesman Dave Cohen said. The search for
Jahi Turner had initially rekindled raw memories of the February kidnapping
and murder of 7 year-old San Diego girl Danielle van Dam. But on Thursday,
100 Marines joined an intensive hunt at a trash landfill site for clues.
Garbage taken
from the boy's neighborhood was deposited there last week, the day before
his stepfather Tieray Jones, 23, reported him missing. Jones told police
he left the boy in a playground for 15 minutes to get a can of soda from
a vending machine and that when he returned, Jahi was gone. Police have
found no witnesses at the playground. Jahi's mother, Tameka Jones, 18,
is a Navy seaman who was away on maneuvers and returned home after learning
of her son's disappearance. Jahi's initial disappearance drew sympathy
from the mother of Danielle van Dam, who appeared at news conferences to
urge volunteers to look for the 2 year-old. Danielle's body was found in
a rural area east of the city more than three weeks after she was snatched
from her bed at night in a case that gripped the nation. Neighbor David
Westerfield has been charged with her murder.
