The department said a search and rescue operation had been launched for the sailor, who was last seen at 1.30am. Search continues for missing Sailor
The Royal Australian Navy has launched an investigation into the disappearance of a sailor from a guided missile frigate which was conducting border patrols near Christmas Island on Friday night.
The crew of HMAS Darwin have been searching for the sailor since he was first noticed missing yesterday morning and an airforce patrol aircraft is now helping with the search.
The Navy's Deputy Marine Commander, Commodore Les Pataky says it is assumed the sailor fell overboard and has now been in the water for more than 24 hours.

Police Reportedly Question Stepfather's Story About Missing Boy
May 2 — Investigators have begun to question the story of a man who said his 2-year-old stepson disappeared from a San Diego playground a week ago, because they found no fingerprints of the boy's in the area, and the man failed a polygraph test, police reportedly said.
Jahi Turner, 2, has been missing since April 25. His stepfather said he left the boy alone briefly in a San Diego park, and returned to find him gone.  (ABCNEWS.com)

California Missing Child Case Turns Sinister
ABCNEWS & Reuters
SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - The search for a 2-year-old San Diego boy, reported missing from a playground a week ago, turned sinister Thursday with reports of glaring inconsistencies in his stepfather's version of events. Police declined comment on local media reports that fingerprint tests had failed to find any evidence of the child having played at the site recently, or that his stepfather had taken a lie detector test and "failed miserably". "We have not commented on details of the investigation in the past and we're not going to start today," police spokesman Dave Cohen said. The search for Jahi Turner had initially rekindled raw memories of the February kidnapping and murder of 7 year-old San Diego girl Danielle van Dam. But on Thursday, 100 Marines joined an intensive hunt at a trash landfill site for clues.
Garbage taken from the boy's neighborhood was deposited there last week, the day before his stepfather Tieray Jones, 23, reported him missing. Jones told police he left the boy in a playground for 15 minutes to get a can of soda from a vending machine and that when he returned, Jahi was gone. Police have found no witnesses at the playground. Jahi's mother, Tameka Jones, 18, is a Navy seaman who was away on maneuvers and returned home after learning of her son's disappearance. Jahi's initial disappearance drew sympathy from the mother of Danielle van Dam, who appeared at news conferences to urge volunteers to look for the 2 year-old. Danielle's body was found in a rural area east of the city more than three weeks after she was snatched from her bed at night in a case that gripped the nation. Neighbor David Westerfield has been charged with her murder.
