Apparel market in Mexico – statistics & facts
With the manufacturing sector making up over 30 percent of Mexico’s GDP, the industrial economy plays a key role in this North American country’s economic prosperity. The textile and apparel industries, as part of this major sector, collectively represented roughly two percent of Mexico’s manufacturing GDP. Despite a slight decrease in apparel production during the last quarter of 2023, the Mexican apparel market can expect continuous growth in the upcoming years, with a market revenue forecast to reach over 22.6 billion U.S. dollars by 2028.
Mexico’s leading apparel companies
In terms of market share, the Mexican department store chains Coppel and Liverpool are considered the leading apparel retailers in Mexico. In 2022, they make up roughly 10 percent of the country’s apparel retail market each. While the local Grupo Coppel and El Puerto de Liverpool generated by far the largest revenue among fashion retailers in Mexico in 2023, international key players like Inditex and H&M also made the list. In 2023, Mexico’s export value of apparel and clothing amounted to over 5.5 billion U.S. dollars. The United States comprised by far the majority of these sales abroad, making it Mexico’s main destination for apparel exports. Since imports of apparel products to Mexico generated roughly 6.3 billion U.S. dollars that year, the North American country recorded a slight trade deficit in the clothing industry that year.
