When a husband and wife (Roig Ballester and Trinidad Alfonso Mocholí ) decided to take their family-run butcher shops and make them into grocery stores in the 1970s, they had no idea they would also be making history. The name of the now-retail-giant? Mercadona.
Since then, through educated acquisitions and making use of the market’s continuous innovations, Mercadona has established itself as largest supermarket chain in Spain and is also present in neighboring Portugal.
