As Australia’s first case of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) was discovered on January 25, 2020, the east coast of Australia had just barely begun to recover from the country’s worst-ever bushfire season which claimed 33 lives and over 3,500 homes. At the time, it was difficult to imagine anything that would be more devastating to the lives and livelihoods of Australians, yet COVID-19 proved to be even more disruptive and would have a widespread impact on economies, individuals, and communities across Australia and the world.
