Amsterdam is the capital city of the Netherlands and is the most populated city in the country with over 905,000 residents. Over recent years, the population has also increased, in part due to the positive net migration. Together with the growing population, the number of companies has also grown significantly, as has the number of hotel guests. Amsterdam also houses one of the biggest airports in the world, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, the second largest in the European Union. Before the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the passenger traffic at the airport had been increasing annually, before shrinking by two-thirds, as a consequence of the pandemic.
