Mercado Libre - statistics & facts
A regional rivalry: Mercado Libre vs Amazon
When talking about e-commerce in Latin America, there are two players who stand up over the rest: Mercado Libre and Amazon. The former has focused its efforts on its region of origin, while the North American giant, Amazon, is present on every continent. The companies are neck and neck in Latin America, excelling in different countries and indicators. In Brazil, Mercado Libre’s website (Mercado Livre) ranked as the most visited among all online stores in 2025. On the other hand, more Mexicans were part of loyalty programs on Amazon than on Mercado Libre in 2024.The two cornerstones: Brazil and Mexico
As more Latin Americans turned to online shopping, Mercado Libre’s dynamics in the 18 markets where it operates changed accordingly. Brazil still accounts for most of the revenue generated by the company, but its share has declined compared to 2019. Meanwhile, Mexico has increased their contribution to Mercado Libre's revenue by over 10 percentage points in the same period. This growth has not come for free, as the company has progressively focused on the Mexican market recently. Mercado Libre disclosed its largest-ever investment in Mexico in 2025, injecting approximately 3.4 billion U.S. dollars into the country. This investment is more than double the amount the marketplace giant allocated to the North American country in 2023. However, the Latin American marketplace does not leave the Brazilian market behind. In April 2025, Mercado Libre announced an investment in the South American country of approximately 5.8 billion U.S. dollars. As Mercado Libre continues increasing its investment in Latin America, the company expects not only to keep what has effortfully earned, but to increase its market share. Brazil and Mexico, the two biggest e-commerce markets in the region, will play an important role in defining the position of Mercado Libre in the following years.
