The United Kingdom was the world’s sixth-largest economy in 2024, having recently been overtaken by India. Although once the world’s superpower in the nineteenth century, the UK’s global influence has declined considerably since then. Despite this, the UK still exerts considerable economic, political, and cultural influence, relative to its small size.

Demographics of the UK

In 2023, the UK had a population of approximately 68 million people, making it the third-largest country in Europe, just ahead of France but smaller than Germany. The UK’s crude birth rate is only slightly above its death rate, with recent population growth mainly driven by immigration. Among the UK’s four constituent countries, England had by far the largest population, at 57 million; ahead of Scotland at 5.5 million, Wales at 3.1 million, and Northern Ireland at 1.9 million. The UK capital, London is also the biggest city in the UK, with a population of around nine million people in 2023, much larger than other significant cities such as Manchester, and Birmingham.

UK Economy

While the UK economy is expected to have grown in 2024, average rates of annual growth have generally been lower since the global financial crisis. In 2020, the UK economy shrank by 10.3 percent and has only recently exceeded its pre-pandemic size. Since the initial recovery, the economy has effectively flatlined and was even in recession at the end of 2023. The sustained period of high inflation between 2021 and 2023, certainly hindered the UK’s economy during this time, as well as causing a severe cost of living crisis. While unemployment fell to historic lows in 2022, this returned to more usual levels in 2024 and shows signs of increasing further in 2025. In 2024, the UK’s government debt was around 100 percent of GDP, with large government spending commitments limiting their ability to reduce this debt, despite high levels of taxation.

UK politics

A constitutional monarchy, the UK’s head of state is King Charles III, with executive and legislative power lying in the British Parliament. Since the last general election, held in July 2024, the UK has been governed by the Labour Party, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Labour’s victory in this election came after 14 years of Conservative-led governments, which notably saw the UK leave the European Union following the Brexit vote of 2016. Although the current government is more pro-European than the previous one, it has no plans to rejoin the EU, Single Market, or Customs Union. Despite this recent pivot from Europe, the UK is closely invested in the continent’s security through its membership of NATO, and has close relations with the United States, and countries of the former British Empire via the Commonwealth of Nations.
