E-commerce in Czechia - statistics & facts
Czech e-commerce has experienced significant growth since 2007, when revenues stood at just 21 billion koruna. Despite two consecutive years of decline, the sector rebounded in 2024, with revenues rising to 194 billion Czech koruna. This rebound highlights the resilience of the e-commerce sector, as online shopping continues to grow in popularity. As a result, online purchases were made by 76.5 percent of internet users in the country in 2024.
The future of the Czech e-commerce market looks particularly promising. The number of users is expected to grow significantly and reach 7.5 million by 2029. Revenue from various segments, including fashion and re-commerce, is projected to increase steadily, while the electronics segment is expected to decline gradually.
Czechs prefer national sellers
People prefer buying from national sellers to foreign ones, a trend clearly reflected in the high percentage of domestic purchases, as nearly 90 percent of online customers reported doing so in 2023. Throughout most of the observed period, e-commerce has been led by women, except in 2022, when men overtook them. Zásilkovna, with an extensive network of pick-up points and delivery boxes, has emerged as the leading delivery company, offering customers a convenient and flexible way to receive their parcels.The demand for electronics is high
The most popular Google shopping search query in 2024 was "iPhone", followed by "Samsung", reflecting the high demand for electronics. Simultaneously, movies and music, including paid downloads and streaming, became the most common categories people in Czechia bought online as of 2024. Clothes and footwear, the leader from previous years, moved into second place. Shoppers are drawn to online shopping mostly by free delivery and coupons or discounts. At the same time, reviews from other customers and an easy return policy also play a role in their decisions. Alza.cz, one of Europe’s leading e-commerce companies based in Czechia, continues to lead the country in online revenues.Optimistic outlook for the future
The country's e-commerce landscape is continuously transforming as many companies expand into online sales, reaching a 20.2 percent share in 2024. While the percentage of companies engaging in e-commerce has remained relatively stable, the financial outcomes for these businesses have been mixed. Nearly half of e-commerce enterprises in Czechia reported revenues in 2024 similar to those in 2023, with 28.5 percent experiencing growth and 23.6 percent facing declines. Looking ahead to the following year, the majority of businesses anticipate stable revenues, though some remain optimistic about significant growth potential.The future of the Czech e-commerce market looks particularly promising.
