The industry encompasses liquid refreshment beverages (LRB) such as bottled water, carbonated soft drinks, energy drinks, fruit beverages, ready-to-drink coffee and tea, sports beverages and value-added water. .

UK market landscape

While the value of the non-alcoholic drinks market in the United Kingdom is comparatively small, it is still one of the largest in the world. In 2023, the market was valued at 19.8 billion GBP. This represents a slight growth from the pre-pandemic value of 15.6 billion pounds. Carbonated soft drinks are, by far, the largest segment of the market, accounting for almost 40 percent of sales. After years of continual growth, the value of the segment declined in 2020, but grew again in the years that followed. Despite the overall market downturn, two segments managed to makes gains in 2020. Dilutables (drink mixes) grew by over nine percent to 830 million pounds and fruit juices were valued at 1.6 billion pounds, an increase of about three percent. Like the general non-alcoholic beverages market, these segments continued to grow from 2021 to 2023.

Consumption trends

In total, roughly 15 billion liters of non-alcoholic beverages were consumed in the UK in 2023, an increase compared to the previous year. Per capita consumption also grew. Weekly household expenditure on non-alcoholic drinks followed household income, with the top earning households spending roughly seven pounds per week while the lowest income earners spent only three pounds. The consumer price index for non-alcoholic beverages amounted to 138.6 in 2023
