With a market size of nearly 257 billion U.S. dollars, furniture retail is a promising e-commerce segment that is forecast to generate more than 430 billion U.S. dollars in revenues by 2029. This lucrative potential is reflected in the average value of online orders of home furniture worldwide, which reached approximately 422 U.S. dollars per order in the second quarter of 2023.

Pure players, omnichannel, and a big disruptor

In the online furniture retail landscape, international pure players such as Amazon and Wayfair coexist with omnichannel retailers. As stores have reopened their doors to customers and economies are settling into a post-pandemic sense of normalcy, brick-and-mortar retailers offering delivery or click-and-collect services are gaining relevance in the online sphere. In 2022, Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com was the leading online store in the furniture and appliances segment, followed in second place by another global e-commerce powerhouse, Amazon.com. However, omnichannel retailers are slowly but surely challenging this decisive lead. The Home Depot's online store ranked fourth globally, despite its online sales share being only 14.2 percent as of 2022. On the other hand, Swedish pioneer of ready-to-assemble (RTA) furniture IKEA generated around 22 percent of annual sales through its online store that same year, garnering website traffic of more than four billion global visitors in 2022.

Online shopping for furniture: a trend that is here to stay?

It is no secret that the pandemic upended consumer behavior and shopping habits, and it has become clear to retailers that some of these behavior changes will outlive the COVID-19 crisis. When it comes to furniture, in-store shopping continues to be the preferred option for global consumers in 2022, with the second-best option being omnichannel. When asked about the main reasons to buy furniture online, around half of surveyed U.S. shoppers in 2022 cited ease of purchase, while some 34 percent of respondents said they were motivated by lower prices online. On a global scale, the e-commerce channel is evidently popular among furniture shoppers, with around a fifth of global consumers purchasing home and garden products online on a monthly basis as of the second quarter of 2023.
